| Microsoft to set record with next Patch Tuesday |
|
 |
 |
- Microsoft's security patch release scheduled for next week will include a
record number of bulletins that fix dozens of vulnerabilities in
several of its products, the company said on Thursday.
- The next Patch Tuesday, scheduled for August 10, will include 14
bulletins, eight of which are rated critical, Microsoft's highest
severity classification, generally reserved for bugs that can be
exploited to remotely execute malware on vulnerable systems with little
or no interaction on the part of the end user. Six of those bulletins
apply to Windows, another one applies jointly to Windows and Silverlight
and the last to the Office suite.

| Fake Firefox update used to sling scareware |
|
 |
 |
- Online con artists have developed a strain of scareware that poses as a Firefox update.
- The tactic is a change from the standard approach adopted by purveyors
of rogue anti-virus scanners - tricking users into visiting scareware
portals running fake security scans that report non-existent security
problems to panic surfers into buying software that's worse than
useless. Prospective marks are normally lured to these sites through
search engine manipulation, which ensures rogue sites appear prominently
in lists of search results for newsworthy terms.

- Warning of an uptick in attacks, Microsoft plans to issue an emergency
update to patch a critical Windows vulnerability that hackers are
exploiting to seize control of PCs.
- The patch, which fixes the way Windows parses shortcut icons, will be
released on Monday at around 10 a.m. California time. It comes two weeks after
reports surfaced that unknown hackers were exploiting the flaw in an
attempt to install malware on systems that control the operations of
power plants and other critical infrastructure. At least two customer of
SCADA, or supervisory control and data acquisition, software offered by
